Some Onboard Demos…

Today I thought I’d record some of the on-board demos from some of my synths.  I got my old Yamaha PSR-530 keyboard to work, I thought it was broken!  It appears that the plug for the DC transformer on the keyboard is busted.  I recall never trying to test it with batteries, I kind of forgot it had a battery compartment.  Low and behold, I put in 6 D-size batteries and it powers right up!  I’ll have to take it apart at some point and see if I can replace the DC-in plug and repair it.  So for now, here are some synth demos.  Enjoy!

Note: Don’t forget to use the ‘next’ and ‘previous’ buttons in the player!  🙂

More messing around with the XV-5080.

I made a couple weird analog-ish patches using a few interesting techniques.

Have a listen:

Here is how I did it.

One patch uses MFX #16 StepFlanger and Pan-Delay global Reverb. The percussive sounds are a side effect of the Step Flanger effect. Pretty cool, huh?

  • Here is the first patch without effects enabled:

  • Here it is with effects enabled:

The other patch uses MFX #45 Multi Tap Delay.

  • Here is the second patch without effects enabled:

The pitch bends are done manually. I may try to program it into an LFO later on.

Here is the whole mix with all effects disabled:

Now, you may ask: “Where is the phasing effect coming from?”

The answer is, I am emulating “Pitch Drift” of the classic analog synthesizer using LFOs on the waveform level. I used a technique derived from this great article from Sound On Sound magazine.

…And now for something completely different. For my friend Arfy, here is a little remix from an old Casio toy keyboard. I don’t remember the model at the moment. Other then the arrangement of the loops and the fact that I layer them sometimes, they are exactly as you would hear from the instrument itself.

Screwing around with the Guitar Amp Simulator…

Wrote this little metal ditty last night using the XV-5080 with SC-8850 on drums.  The first half is original, or maybe it’s based on something I’ve heard that’s stuck in my head.  Either way I’d like to elaborate on it some more.  The second half of the recording is a surprise.  Comments?

The Legend of Zelda II: Medley by JHarris01; Remastered

A fellow member of the QuestStudios.com forums sent me a MIDI of an old medley he did of themes from the second Zelda NES game.  I remastered it in style using the XV-5080.  Adding a couple small things and changing a few others.  Overall, re-balancing each instrument track.  Oh, you can also vote on this song on newgrounds.com

Edit 7/6/2009:  MP3 Updated. 🙂

Shipwrecks and Demons: Now with 20.385% more Dwarves!

Here’s the latest version of Shipwrecks and Demons!

Current synopsis:  Your character has just been shipwrecked into a woodsy area, you start exploring your surroundings, find a small clearing to a cave perhaps, then the monsters come out!  Then, you find the camps of a volcano-worshiping tribe (I need to add some volcano sound effects hehe), then perhaps venture to a cave at the base of a mountain deeper in the forest to find inside it is a large empty dwarven hall or throne room.  Next thing you know you are hiding behind darkened columns in a corner observing some sort of party…

PS: The new part is at the end around 6:54  Oh,  and if you can figure out where that percentage comes from..   you get…  to pat yourself on the back!  Good Job!

Shipwrecks and Demons (Updated again!)

Added a new verse to the beginning of the soundtrack.  I’m having a lot of fun with this thing.  I had to plug a 2nd MIDI cable into the XV-5080 so I could use the 2nd set of MIDI channels as the single group of 16 channels was not enough, now I have all 32!  Now I just have to watch the accursed polyphony limit.

Have I mentioned that I am really starting to love the XV-5080 now?  I still need to get some more SRX expansion boards, I really want to get SRX-04 (Symphonique Strings) and SRX-10 (Big Brass Ensemble), perhaps later on maybe SRX-03 (Studio) also. 🙂

Current synopsis:  It starts on a pirate or maybe viking ship, then you get shipwrecked into a woodsy area, you start exploring your surroundings, find a small clearing to a cave perhaps, then the monsters come out!  Then, you find the camps of a volcano-worshiping tribe (I need to add some volcano sound effects hehe), then perhaps venture a cave at the base of a mountain deeper in the forest to find inside it is a large empty dwarven hall or throne room.

Shipwrecks and Demons!

Good title?  Either way, here is the latest revision to the track I am working on.

Synopsis:
Some ambient background music I guess, I picture the situation being as follows:  Your character has just been shipwrecked into a woodsy area, you start exploring your surroundings, find a small clearing to a cave perhaps, then the monster(s?) come out!  Maybe you wake up? 🙂

Scary!(er?)

Here’s a little longer clip in the same vein as the previous.  I imagine myself staring at a large anvil in a dark outdoor woodsy area, maybe near a shipwreck.  Like a password/menu/stage select screen/area or something.  Then, the monster comes out at you!!!  But, that’s just me… 🙂
